Organ Transplant Essay

Through out the last week studying the necessity of human organ transplants. It has opened up my thoughts and mind about not only why they are and are not necessary. I have also learned that humanity puts a tremendous amount of hope in science and technology. When a human becomes ill he or she will put incredible amounts faith in what medicine and technology will cure them. When it comes down to the perception of death we become very desperate to survive. Even though there is a 2 in 10 death rate among heart transplant patients, many still take the chance. It is festinating how humans thrive to survive they will only focus on their own survival at any cost even if it means a risky operation such as a transplant.

Despite what I argued in my debate I firmly believe organ transplants are necessary. With out a pancreas transplant humans become susceptible to kidney failure, blindness, impairment to the nerves of the hands and feet, diabetes, and heart attacks or strokes (http://www.nebraskamed.com/transplant/pancreas_procedures.cfm). If this procedure is not preformed there is a high risk of death among patients and they will become very ill. If this procedure is preformed there is a high percentage living through the surgery where as with out it a person would most likely die “in 2006, there were 5,423 people who died waiting for a transplant.” (http://www.lifelineofohio.org/8615.cfm). An average of “18 men, women, and children die each day waiting for an organ transplant” (http://www.lifelineofohio.org/8615.cfm). As you can see there are many health risks to not having one of these procedures done and a person in need of a transplant probably isn’t willing to risk not having one. Although there are many risks of having surgeries such as these there is more risk if surgery is not preformed.

People desire these surgeries because when they are faced with death we will do almost any thing in our power to save ourselves. Freud’s theory of parts of personality is a stepping stone in the question of why the human race must strive to live when other species “accept” death. The average person has a part of personality Freud called “Ego”, it is aware of reality and operates using the “reality principle”. When that person is dying and becomes desperate their personality fits into an “Id” profiling. An “Id” has no real perception of reality and seeks to satisfy its needs through what is called primary processes. A dying person isn’t an ordinary person that uses their “Ego”, a dying person obtains their “Id”. This causes the person to do what ever it takes to survive and in many cases this may involve getting organ transplants. Of course this is all a hypothetical thought but it does justify why people will seek cures and they will continue thinking of organ transplants as this cure even though there is a large percentage of failure. As long as these people seek the cures organ transplants will be needed and necessary.

I believe in the world today organ transplants are needed, I do not only think this for the traditional reasons i.e. because it saves lives or helps people even though that is necessarily part of my theory. I think this because in our civilization every one is looking for ways to live longer and essentially cheat death. Organ transplants are ways to do this and no matter what obstacles stand in the way human beings will always feel this way. Our civilization is even trying to find other ways to live longer and feel younger for example: could be some thing as simple as a healthy diet and exercise or some thing as serious as life support or lipitor it can also be the newest beauty treatment or ageing cream. As our civilization dwells in its technology and development humans will consider not only organ transplants but other new medical breakthroughs ways to escape death. This is why it is so important and necessary not because it will save individual lives but our civilization is trying to save its self from the concept of death. As we become more advanced we will find more and more ways to postpone the inevitable

I strongly believe organ transplants are necessary, not because they save lives but because humans will do anything to survive and this will never change. As long as the human mentality stays the same risky and resource consuming operations such as organ transplants will be needed.
