Personal Essay

This essay will highlight the reasons why a college education is important, , highlights of my high school extracurricular activities ,community service, and my education and career goals. As a full-time student, employee, and single- parent I will also discuss my personal circumstances, work experience and my present financial need.

I will first briefly discuss my high school extracurricular activities. I was apart of the Varsity basketball team and the tract team at Brandon High School for three years. My senior year on the basketball team I won an award for the most valuable player (defensively) after we won Districts in Hillsborough county. I was also apart of a service club called PEARLS, in which we practiced community service and leadership skills.

After graduation I began working full-time as a claims processor at an insurance company. I worked as a claims processor for once year and shortly after the year I was laid off. During my lay off period, I realized the importance of school. I enrolled myself in a community college and received a 220-property and casualty license. While I was in school obtaining my license I became pregnant and conceived a son April of 2002. My work continued in the insurance field, working at MetLife Auto and home as a salvage clerk, claims processor and eventually becoming a level II Claims Adjuster. The more I worked as a claims adjuster I realized how good I was with numbers and I decided to re-attend the community college in an effort to obtain my Associates degree. With the help of my parents I was able to work full-time as a claims adjuster, attend school full-time as a student in addition to becoming a single parent.
