FRANKENSTEIN

The Frankenstein novel was written in 1818 and it was written because Mary Shelley got an idea of using a new creation, ELECTRICITY to create a monster and that was why the novel was written.

The two main characters in the novel are Victor Frankenstein and the monster. I am examining these two characters because it is the main part of the story and it is the part where the monster is created and where Victor Frankenstein neglects the monster and runs away from him.

Victor is one of the main characters in the novel. He is a professor and he is the person who created the monster. Victor admired people who went to university and he also admired his dad. This has affected him because if he wouldn’t have gone to university then he wouldn’t have created the monster. When Victor was younger the death of his mum made him obsessed with life and death. Victor went to university to study science and when Victor outgrew university he turned his mind to exploring as he went to the

North Pole.

When Frankenstein sees the monster opens his ‘watery eyes’ he is revolted by what he has created. The monster has ‘watery eyes’, ‘straight black lips’ and has a ‘shrivelled complexion’ also Frankenstein describes the monster as a ‘lifeless thing’. When Frankenstein realises his disgust he ‘escapes’ from the monster leaving the monster in a world he doesn’t recognise. Frankenstein’s dream reveals that he does create a monster. When Frankenstein rejects the monster at his bed it shows that he doesn’t have any real feelings for the monster and he doesn’t realise that the monster is like a baby and we sympathise with the monster. I don’t think Frankenstein acts in a way that a creator would because the creator would not abandoned the monster but in this case the monster is left chasing his creator, Frankenstein. I think that if the monster wouldn’t have turned out this ugly and lifeless then Frankenstein would of stayed at its bedside and wouldn’t of said such things like ‘lifeless thing’ ‘straight black lips’ ‘watery eyes’. I think the author Mary Shelley is saying at that time science was dark, scary, and could be dangerous at times like this. I don’t think that Frankenstein cares for the monster because his creation isn’t as perfect as Victor thought it would be ‘I beheld the wretch, the miserable monster. I Think the monsters start in life was a lot different to Victor Frankenstein’s start in life because the monster was brought into this world waking up in a dark room with all body parts with blood on them and waking up with no mum or dad there to care for your needs but Frankenstein came into this world with a mum and dad and was wanted and was not neglected or not loved.
