Image Essay

In the essay I will examine an advertisement for Tiffany’s. The main message depicted in this image is that one should buy their jewellery from Tiffany’s. The underlying message is when you buy jewellery from Tiffany’s, you will share intimate moments with your loved ones, and feel drawn to the person who gave you a gift from Tiffany’s.

The overall impression of the image is one of high-class stylish appeal. The picture is of a couple starring out off a high rise looking down on the streets below them. The photo is in black and white, with a blue jewellery box adding a touch of colour. The image portrayed is sexy, but very classy. The black and white photo is romantic and soothing. The couple in the photo are the main focus in the photo, but you’re drawn to a piece of colour in the right corner. The lady is holding an elegant blue box. The jewellery box in colour adds flare, and draws attention and wonder. When looking at the advertisement, you begin to have questions. What is in the box? Did he propose? What is the special occasion? I think that the couple embracing on a high-rise in trendy evening wear gives it the high-class feeling. The image portrays a stylish appeal, because the women is dressed in a glamorous beaded dress with a scarf wrapped around her neck, and the man is dressed in a slick suit. The black and white photo makes the picture look flawless, and the product wrapped perfectly with a neat white ribbon is intriguing. The overall picture displays a contemporary ad.

The main focus of the picture is the couple, but your eyes are guided by the women’s hand to the box that she is holding. The couple as the main focus adds a sexual image before you see the product. The couple is focused in the picture, but the background is fuzzy to show the focus and main aim of the picture. Having the background unfocused shows the importance of the couple and the product. The product is in a light pale blue box that appears subtle and sophisticated. In most advertisements, the individuals in the photo are holding the product, so it is not essential to use a flashy, colourful box. I think that the pale blue box enhances and captures the same elegance as the couple depicts. Adding the blue box in a black and white photo increases the importance of the ad. Many ads have distractions, but having the blue box in colour shows the viewer the influence the box has on the couple.

The couple gazing onto the street with the man holding the women in his arms are captivating a special moment. The moment captured is special and significant, because of the box that was given to the women. The product in the box is as elegant as the picture. The picture displays a sense of confidence that the item in the box doesn’t need to be exposed, the viewer knows that whatever is in the box is as perfect as the moment their experiencing. Most women, who know their jewellery, can identity the blue boxes to Tiffany’s products. I think that this ad displays certainty to the viewer that, since you know it’s Tiffany’s, you know it is a gorgeous piece.

The advertiser intends to evoke emotions of love, togetherness, and affection from the photo. The couple is sharing a special moment, and the embracement of their bodies is warm and affectionate. When looking at the photo, the viewer is envious of the moment. You are unable to see the couple’s faces, but you can see that the women’s body is relaxed, and you get a feeling of warmth and passion from the photo.

I think that the ad is targeted for younger couples in the market for jewellery for an engagement, anniversary, or for a newly wed gift. The couple in the photo are quite young and well dressed; therefore, I think that this ad is targeted for couples that are successful.

The overall ad is sophisticated and very appealing. As soon as you look at the picture you feel a romantic warmth from the couple and realize the couple is sharing a deep connection. This is a successful and effective ad, because the picture and the product look elegant. I think that every girl would like a box from Tiffany’s, and I think this ad is a great target for young couples looking to purchase the perfect engagement ring. For me, the only thing that would go against the ad is that it is so sophisticated, some people will feel as though they cannot afford their products. Nevertheless, I think this ad is persuasive, because of the emotions it evokes, and the flare the picture and product displays.
