Relationships are a central theme in the play Romeo and Juliet. Explain using examples from at least 3 scenes
Relationships in the tragic play Romeo and Juliet are very important. I will explain in this essay why they are important. Using evidence from three major scenes in the play. In this essay the three relationships that I will show the importance of are the relationships between the two starcrossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Friar Lawrence and last of all the Capulet boys and the Montague boys. The three scenes that I will use are the scene at Juliet s balcony after the Capulet ball where Romeo comes to see her again, the scene where Friar Lawrence and Romeo have the vital discussion about Romeo marrying his enemy Juliet, and the fight scene in the streets of Verona between the Capulet boys and the Montague boys which leads to the death of Mercutio best friend to Romeo and Tybalt kinsman to Juliet, Romeos new found bride. In this scene also showing the very personal interest into Tybalts death by Lady Capulet showing her feelings for Tybalt and also the peace maker Bennvolio who desperately tries to keep the peace in the tragic fight scene.
In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet By William Shakespeare the most important relationship is the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet hold a relationship stronger than any other relationship in the play. Romeo and Juliet are two starcrossed lovers living in Fair Verona, from two feuding families holding an ancient grudge. Romeo and Juliet are madly in love and very young Juliet not yet being 14. Romeo and Juliets relationship is threatened to extinction when they learn that they can no longer be together because Juliet is Capulet and Romeo is a Montague. They do not care that they are from two feuding families the Capulets and the Montagues. Juliet says Whats in a name? That which we call a rose/ by any other name would smell as sweet. The two lovers do not want to be apart and do not want to leave each other in the balcony scene. Juliet says on her balcony Goodnight Goodnight. Parting is such a sweet sorrow? That I shall say goodnight till it be morrow. At the balcony Juliet suddenly starts to worry that Romeo will get caught in the Capulet walls and that their love is too rash and unadvised. Juliet is about to leave when she expresses to Romeo to her love for him with the words My bounty is as boundless as the sea/ My love as deep. Juliet is called away by her nurse and then returns Romeo says O wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied Juliet says what satisfaction canst thou have tonight Romeo says Th’ exchange of thy loves faithful vow for mine. This conversation shows that even though very young and having just met they want to get married. About marriage Juliet says Thy purpose marriage send me word tomorrow. This paragraph shows the importance of Romeo and Juliets relationship in the play. This paragraph is working up to weather or not relationships are central or not.
In the play the relationship between Friar Lawrence a Franciscian Monk and Romeo is also very important because it leads to marriage of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence for help with everything. Friar Lawrence addresses Romeo as dear son and pupil mine. The relationship between Romeo and Friar Lawrence is a strong bond almost like a father son relationship because they hold a relationship stronger than the relationship between Romeo and his Mother and Father. After the night at the Capulet ball and the balcony scene Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence about him marrying him and Juliet. Romeo says that thou consent to marry us today. At first Friar Lawrence is not sure about the risks of marrying them both but then he realises that doing this may stop the feuding between the Capuets and the Montagues. So he says in one respect ill assistant be/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households rancour to pure love. Romeo also trusts Friar Lawrence with his life. Romeo and Friar Lawrences relationship started when Romeo was only young because Friar Lawrence was once Romeos tutor and mentor this is shown when friar Lawrence says For doting not for loving/ Pupil mine. This paragraph shows the importance of Romeo and Friar Lawrences relationship and also works up to wether or not relationships are central in the play.
The last relationship in this essay is the relationship between the Capulet boys and the Montague boys. This relationship is also very important because it leads to death of Mercutio best friend to Romeo and Tybalt kinsman to Juliet Romeo one true love and newly found wife. The relationship is that they are the from the two feuding families the Capulets and the Montagues. Like the rest of there families the groups of boys are feuding and are also always fighting in the street. in the streets of Verona Mercutio says Couple it with something make a word and blow. He says this because he is trying to start a fight with Tybalt. This demonstrates that they are always fighting in the street. due to this relationship there are two deaths each tragic to different people in the play. The two deaths are the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. In the streets Tybalt kills Mercutio under Romeos arm and then vengefully Romeo full of anger seeks out Tybalt and kills him. After Romeo kills Tybalt he is then banished from Verona by the prince. The prince says Let Romeo hence in haste/ else when he is found the hour is his last. Due to Romeo being banished he can no longer see Juliet. Through this relationship we also see the importance of the relationship between lady Capulet and Tybalt. The relationship is the feelings that Lady Capulet had for Tybalt that she had been hiding but come out after Tybalts death. Also through this fighting Bennvolios relationship between him and his close friends is shown when he begs to Mercutio that they go home just before the tragic fight scene.
This essay has shown that in the play Romeo and Juliet By William Shakespeare relationships are very important. This has been shown with the loving relationship between the two starcrossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, the strong bond between Friar Lawrence and Romeo, and the hating relationship between the Capulet boys and the Montague boys and also bennvolio the peace maker and his close friends, and last of all Lady capuets hidden feelings for the prince of cats Tybalt. This relationship shows how important the relationships are however they are not the central topic of the play. The other main topics in the play violence and conflict shown with the Capulets and Montagues.
