What is love? People might think it is agape love, aros love, Philadelphia love, and other kinds of love. I think love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy it does not boast, it is not proud. In Great Expectations, one of the main themes that happens many times is love. Pip faces love in all different ways. The quote, “People only fall in love with those who treat them properly and love them in return” puzzles me because it sounds so easy and love is very hard.
In the beginning Pip loves his family, and especially Joe. But later he starts to realize that they embarrass him because they are not rich like he is. Pip loves Estella, Miss Havisham’s ward. Estella was trained by Miss Havisham to hate boys and break their hearts.(Great Expectations) And sure enough Estella was playing with Pip’s heart. In the story, there is like a love and no-love chain. Pip loves Estella but she doesn’t love back. Joe loves Pip and sometimes he loves back. Mrs. Joe has no love for Joe because she beats him and he doesn’t do anything. Pip also loves Miss Havisham but she doesn’t love Pip. He loves them because they are higher class and richer and more good looking than his family. Pip thinks Miss Havisham loves him but she really doesn’t. towards the middle of the book, Joe loves Pip and his wife and they love him back even though they don’t show it. It shows that Pip cares for Joe more than Mrs. Joe and that is one of the differences. This relates to the top quote I have stated before.
The Bible talks a lot about the subject love. In the Bible, astonishing chapters about love is revealed to us in 1 Corinthians chapter 13. Here, it talks about how love doesn’t fail. For me, this is one of my favorite verses and it reads, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (Bible Gateway) Pip loves Estella with all his heart and she just smiles.Joe lovespip but he he starts to not liking him because he is poor and lower class then him. They are not treating each other right when they try to love each other.
In my opinion, I agree and disagree with the statement. I think its wrong because if someone like pushes you really hard and wants you to be better in something, you get frustrated and annoyed by that person. You don’t really like that person a whole lot but later you will thank that person for pushing you to be the best. And I think it is right because if your mom gives you 100 dollar bill, you will love them in return.
