William Eugene Smith

In my presentation on William Eugene Smith I propose to talk about him and his background, his life before his work. I will then go on to talk about his later life including how he inspired other people with his work. As he is a very famous photographer I will discuss how he made a name for himself and what the significance of his work is. By showing examples of his work and discussing their meaning and uniqueness I will show my audience how Eugene worked. Show why his work is so well credited and how he uses his work to show his own fears and feeling rather than just create an effective photograph. As a photographer and a person he was taken very seriously as he was so involved with his work. Whilst in Okinawa photographing a photo essay called ‘A day in the life of a front line soldier’ he was seriously injured by a piece of Japanese shell fragment, and whilst in hospital his response was “I forgot to duck but I got a wonderful shot of those who did... my policy of standing up when the others are down finally caught up with me.” This shows his seriousness and determination to get the image he wants. This to me shows a man who is extremely dedicated to his work.
