Suicides of Students Especially in India

Introduction

In the law of life, committing suicide is a crime, but how can it be a crime when there are factors that urges the person to do it. Who is the criminal? In the generation of the involved changes, businesses and other institutions is not the only one being affected but also, the students that in the middle of changes of life.

Background of the Study and Problem Statement

Based on the report last July of the year 2006, there is an alarming figure of suicidal students. Two students from Delhi committed suicides after learning the results of the examinations. Suicide is currently the third leading cause of death among the age group of 15-24 year. This is the same age group which is also crucial for the students and the only idea to cover their failures and weakness is to commit suicides (The DayAfter, 2006). As the main problem of the research, what are the reasons behind the suicidal actions of the students especially in India?

Research Objectives

The research established a strong ground of objectives which is first, to identify the main reasons or problem of the students. Second is to set strategies in to reduce or eliminate the suicidal actions among the student by highlighting the contributions of the parents and the school.

Research Questions

The study prepared several questions that will help the researcher/s in determining the factors that might contribute on the suicide decisions of the students of India.

1. What are the recent situations of the students before the suicide?

2. What are the clues or changes in behavior of the students that might trigger to suicide?

3. What are the contribution of the parents and school in helping the students not to commit suicide?

Literature Review

Due to the exam pressures, minor anxieties, sleeping disorders, lack of appetite, depression, personality disorders, and family or financial dilemmas might be the ultimate reason for a student to commit suicide. In India, the students who hang themselves are previously affected by the different pressures in the school as well as the examinations and results. Because of the psychological changes in mostly of the student during their high school and early colleges, the pressures brought them to sometimes guilt, humiliation, or disappointment (The DayAfter, 2006). Many students contemplate the idea of suicide because they could not achieve the good scores expected by their parents (Iype, 2004). According to the study, the students are also appeared to have been drinking shortly before their suicide. Students are also in participation of poisoning and use of firearms aside from hanging in their house-ceiling (SPRC, 2002). Because of the increasing number of the students who are engaged in suicide, many organizations took initial step to call the attention of the school and to re-introduce the concept of family.

Based on the conducted investigations, the young adults who commit suicide are not always the one who are topnotch in academics. Most of the high schools are drop-out while the college students find troubles especially in the college of Law. Many students are engaged in the different trouble that usually involves the mental health and the conflict of parents, peers, and studies. Students in India find it hard to balance when there is a strong pressure coming from their parents. In addition, parents should also have the concern to identify on what behind the school or colleges there student is enrolled to. The parents and the educators must work together to avoid the suicidal actions among the students.

Methodology

The applied method of the study is through the use of comparative case studies. In the past years, there are many reported case and literatures about the approach of human kind in suicides. Therefore, the study used that opportunity to establish the fair ground of measurement in judging the related reasons of suicides. Moreover, the method allowed the study to assess or re-defined the past works to create another impact in towards the relationship of the youth and their family.

Conclusion

In between the age where the changes appear, students are normally troubled. The roles and responsibilities of the education institutions are to make a call for duty with regards to the care of the students. By supporting and guiding the students, there is a great impact that the student might lessen the feeling of being pressured. Furthermore, the parents should learn the different strategies or approach that might reduce the risk of student suicide. This involves the promotion of the mental well-being, collaboration and communication, social integration, and through reducing the stress of the academic life.
