I would like to talk about the school shootings in the US. The reason why I am choosing to write about this topic is because I feel that it is an important issue that needs to be corrected or our community will go down hill.
The three points my article describes are if women are more of a target, the similarity’s between states on their school shootings and how the argument of why the small towns seem to have more shootings than the big schools.
The first topic that comes to mind is why are women more of a target then man? Could it be that majority of the school shootings happen by men? Or maybe even that a woman is less harmful? All those thoughts come in mind and this article “A pattern in rural school Shootings”. Their has been a study that shows that since the 1970’s women have been the most targeted, mainly for “revenge” as the article states.
Secondly school shootings can have some similarities, such as why do the shooters kills themselves. Well speaking of similarities Pennsylvania, Colorado, Vermont and our home state Wisconsin. Dr. Newman says “These were cases of kids coming for revenge”.
Thirdly why do people think that it is a lot easier to attend a smaller school to avoid school shootings? Statistics show that the smaller towns are the one’s that are getting the school shootings. Cheryl Meyer a professor psychology at Wright state university states” people think small towns are safer, but in small community grievances can fester” and she also states that “it’s mostly about revenge”.
The one question that a lot of sociologist might ask is if the kids that are attempting these school shootings have a disability or were they abused while being a child. This type of question would be considered as a theoretical type of question. The reason why this article is more of a theoretical type of question is because everything you state has to be a theory first because it’s hard to find the right answer.
The way I would use my time to research this topic would be to go back as fare as when school shootings started and look at the similarities and try and find out why kids want to go to school and kill others or try.
