Sociology

When we think of education what comes to mind, or is education right for you? During this essay I will be discussing the five functions of education and how education can be the deciding factor weather or not you’re successful later in life.

What is the true definition of education? Education means the social institution through which society provides its members with important knowledge including basic facts, job skills, culture norms and values. There are five functions of education that makes a society successful. The first function of education is socialization which means to train teachers to develop and pass on the specialized knowledge that adults will need for their job. For example teachers should try and develop more of a way to help kids become something out of using their education. Second function of education is Cultural Innovation which means the social sciences, the humanities and the fine arts leads to discovery and changes in our way of life. For example this function is directed towards college students and universities because of the wide variety of people so it makes it a lot easier to do medical and sex research. The third function of education is Social Integration which means that schooling molds a diverse population into one society sharing norms and values. For example a public school would be a perfect example of this function because everyone is accepted in a public school in there own groups. The forth function of education is Social Placement meaning that school identify talent and match instruction to ability. The last function of education is Latent Functions of schooling meaning that school occupies thousands of young people and teens competing for an opportunity in the job opportunity. There are three ways to look at education and their approach on education. The first analysis is Structural Functional analysis this approach looks at how the classroom behavior of teachers and students can very from one place to another also explains the problems with our educational system. The second approach is the symbolic interaction which means the reality they experience in their day to day interaction, also how stereotypes can shape what goes on in the classroom. The last approach is social conflict meaning that schooling can cause perpetuates social inequality and how stereotypes of good or bad students. Social conflict doesn’t not agree with the structural functional.

Public schools are a lot different from others schools the big difference is the funding which results in unequal resources. The average teacher at a public school makes 46,752 a year. I think that if teachers get paid low then the standards are low, teachers may not take it as serious as other teachers at a private school. When I was little I went to 11 different schools in one year they all were public schools with different names but they all seem the same because of the students were all in the lower class. I’ve notice myself some teachers see how the kids present them selves and the teachers thinks that they not their to learn so the teacher doesn’t take the class serious therefore the students don’t get their proper education.

Overall education is very important and has the chance to be changes overtime. What I mean by changes could be the way we teacher students or the way we divide up the money something big has to change if not our educational system is going to go down. We might not even need to do anything at all because of the way our society makes us out to be. The reason why private schools get more money and seen as the perfect school is because they get good results and the big plus for them is that they have smaller classes. Studies show that students can learn better if they have a smaller environment.
