However, there is an increasing interests in terms of to the social responsibility of the enterprises, can determine the level of impact or influence that a firm can create in the society while maintaining their capability to satisfy their long-term goals.
Background and Problem Statement
Corporate social responsibility is an essential element of present and future social policies. The strategy is to develop the multinational economic and financial groups that is needed in global market economy or firms that going through serious of internal crisis. Being the organization that has social responsible practices is one of the after sought contributions of the firms in the society. The concept of corporate social responsibility accommodates a wide variety of achievements and initiatives that covers the moral and ethical concerns such as the code of conduct and good governance. On the other hand, the aim for corporate social responsibility is to have an overall positive impact on society through a socially responsible conduct which includes the voluntary integration by the companies of social and environmental concerns towards the commercial activities and the relationship with stakeholders (Fonteneau, 2003). However, in the third world countries like in Nigeria and its firms, how can the idea of corporate social responsibility of CSR be appraised?
Research Aim and Objectives
The main aim of the study is to search for the evidence in which the CSR is currently in practice particularly in Nigerian firms. To accommodate the main aim of the study, there are three important objectives that can serve as the propeller of the study towards its completion. First is to determine the approach of the Nigerian firm like the MTN in terms of CSR. Second is to influence invested by the firm in the said country. And third is to link the ideas of CSR in well-developed countries to the developing countries, like the Nigeria, and their application of CSR in globalization.
Literature Review
Mobile Telephone Networks (MTN) is a leading provider of telecommunication services in Africa and in the Middle East. The aim of the establishment of the organization is to establish and develop the communications market. Eventually, from its launch in the year of 1994, the firm already operates in Botswana, Rwanda, Nigeria, and other neighboring countries. The approach of the firm towards the CSR is described to be part of their business strategy in implementing and navigating the growth of the information and communication technologies (The World Bank, 2006). The CSR is an important way for MTN to increase their contribution to society and to sustainable development. The strategy covers the things and organizations have an impact beyond its immediate operations and legal obligations. Because of corporate social responsibility that goes beyond legal obligations that involves the issues of health and safety in the workplace, employment policies and environmental protection (Noon, 2008). In the application of CSR it duly pushes the initiatives for the business (Perigot, 2003).
The aim of the country like the Nigeria in economic development and sustainability is suited with the aim of MTN in terms of modernization. Aside from committing itself to provide jobs to a thousand of people, the MTN is still fulfilling its duties in terms of training and assistance to the employees and their clients. They created a large investment in the society by connecting the gaps between the people and it can be explained through the establishment of distribution networks, payphones, manned payphones, and village phones. In their continuous practice, they already close the gaps in delivering the communication and accessibility even in rural areas. As part of their unbiased report, MTN continuously aim to create empowerment and opportunities and contribute to socio-economic development (The World Bank, 2006).
Methodology
The suggested method that can be used in the study is the use of comparative case studies that focusing on the same issue of CSR. Through the use of the comparative case-study method, the study can gain its advantage by investigating the related literatures in CSR among the countries. In addition, through the continuous review on the literature, the study can identify any literature gaps that might lead to identify the current practice of CSR among the Nigerian firms.
Conclusion
Corporate social responsibility or CSR is the response or the commitment of the organization in the society in where they operate. To be part of the business strategy, it is better that organizations are willing to deliver its essence through the effective and efficient communication.
