Grief: Sociological Critique and Social Dimension within the Community

Introduction

In the society, there are things that people should consider. One of the most important parts of being human is paying attention unto the feelings of the people around you. If one is not sensible enough to give importance on the feelings of other people, they might end up hurting them. On the other hand, the individual who has been left will feel backstabbing pain, anguish, angst, and other negative feelings. For an instance, there is also a negative feeling where an individual might meet because of the grief. For some psychological reasons, depression is the ultimate opponent of an individual and if he or she did not won the battle; the person might see his own locked into the middle of grief.

Background and Problem Statement

The most common form of grief might come from an incident like car accident and other misfortunate events that might lead to a great depression. A person who also in a state of shock is considered to be more clouded in the midst of depression and grief .

Research Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to focus on the effects of grief not only on the person but also in the social dimension within the community. It can be only answered through the help of the three essential objectives. First is to trace the various origin of the grief and detect if there is any level of grief that a person might possess. Second is to recognize the possible sociological impact of grief through critically analyzing the behavior of an individual. And lastly, is to administer the changes that might reflect on the role of the individual within the social dimension.

Literature Review

The common grief incidents that can affect the social life of an individual are death of a loved one (family, friend, or pet), divorce, family crisis, and financial loss (James and Friedman, 2003). Grief can be triggered by a shocking incident or accident which seems to have a deep attachment to the person. Most likely, the situations like the sudden death of the love one can be the most common example of grief that might affect the individuals’ everyday life. When a person experience a piercing depth of emotion, it is better to look or ask for help. Family or/and friends are the most effective people whom an individual can trust. If there are no positive changes, there are other medical professionals that might help an individual promote the better living. Most of the time, an individual who is trapped in the event of grief is expected to be more focus on work and other activities that can made his mind away on the event that causes him grief (AHMAC, 2004). However, too much focus on those things to run away from the darkest event of his life is not entirely promoted because an individual, no matter how desperately he finds a way to ease his pain and weakness will still end up facing them. It is not good to face the bad events in an instance because healing takes time, and sometimes it takes years. However, focusing again of the medical concept, there are available medicines that can be used to lessen the pain of the individuals who are currently experiencing grief. But for some medical reasons, the use of the said medicine such as lithium is not promoted by the medical society without the supervision of an expert (ACCC, 2003; Casanova, 2008).

Methodology

The methodology that can be applied in the study is through the use survey and interview. On the first phase of the method which is the survey, the research will focus on the population of the participants who already experienced the different poses of grief. The questionnaire will use the Likert Scale as the survey tool in order to determine the level of grief that the participants encounter before and how they managed to cope with it. The use of the survey will serve as the summary of all their reflections regarding the emotional feeling of grief. On the other hand, the second phase of the methodology which is the interview will be locked unto the psychologists and/or psychiatrist who clinically managed the patient or encounter an individual who experience the grief and needs professional help. Most of the patients that categorized under their care are those individuals who are recently experiencing depression (e.g. bi-polar depression). The design of the interview is to tackle the side of the mental and emotional advisors and finding the adequate solutions before affecting the entire society. It is important to seek the opinions of the health care providers to determine the extent, influence, or impact of grief in the society.
