Ethical Business in Pharmaceutical Industry

Introduction

Pharmaceutical industry is a unique type of business because they specializes the creation of drugs and medicines that are essential in the achieving the quality of health and wellness for the people. Aside from the comprehensive and strict researches done by the industry, the market is another challenge for the industry. The pharmaceutical businesses should ensure that all the products they offer can satisfy the health needs of the people and should be under the ethical considerations.

Background and Problem Statement

The pharmaceutical industry opened various opportunities from their researches and investigations on the most effective type of medicines. The recent discovery that the industry introduced in the market is vaccine for the HIV/Aids prevention. Still, there are areas that should be develop and reviewed for the qualitative standards. The processes that can be use as the standards can be the reference of the other pharmaceutical businesses that is expected to conduct in the local and international levels (UNAIDS, 2000). Through the use of the standards, how can the pharmaceutical industry ensure that the processes involved are under the ethical considerations?

Research Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to determine the application of ethical standards and business operations under the pharmaceutical industry. To achieve this aim, the study prepared the three objectives that can help the organization of thoughts. First is to determine the various business and processing challenges encountered by the organization. Second is to recognize the ethical approach of the organization. And third is to investigate the strengths and weaknesses in the approaches of the organization on their ethical standards.

Literature Review

There are various strategies that the pharmaceutical businesses apply in order to compete with the other organization and serve well in the market. The involvement of the scientific exchange of information or knowledge, and transfer of skills between the institutions builds the capacity and ensure the continuous development of the pharmaceutical industry. In the creation of the newly developed medicines, the national and local ethical capacity is reviewed and assessed. The activities involved in processing the medicines are important to build the partnerships, national information campaigns, and strengthen the areas of scientific research. The ethical standards are defined as essential part of the pharmaceutical industries to sustain the commitments of the organization in allocating the funds to create the sufficient medicines or vaccines that will complement in the prevention and treatment interventions. The combination of the ethical and scientific capacity can multiple the trials but have the strength in developing the most desirable vaccines (UNAIDS, 2000). However, there are arguments that even in the working relations within the pharmaceutical businesses do not comply with the ethical considerations. In the workplace where men are usually the decision-makers, most issues covered were related to the sexual relationships and preventing the female partners to participate in the creation of medicinal products. It is clearly that male partners attend the researches and other commitments that are related to employment while the female also needs to participate for their growth. Significantly, this is an ethical consideration based on the workplace (Moodley, 2007). The issues of the ethical implications on the health care professionals from the pharmaceutical companies are criticized to be potential in ethically troubling. Aside from the work relationships, the compensation from the pharmaceutical companies for the provided services are also considered, in which if not satisfied, might compromise the health care professional’s objectivity, integrity, and ethical commitments to patients and the entire community. Therefore, it is important the ethical challenges and the actions given to address the issues are discussed through the examination in the pharmaceutical industry. In this way, the pharmaceutical institutions can develop a new ethical consideration regarding the work and operations (Berkowitz, 2006).

Methodology

The suggested method in the study is the use of the secondary information that can be acquired from the medical and organizational reports of various pharmaceutical businesses. The review of the World Health Organization and the Department of Food and Drugs in the country is also an acceptable source of information, for which they are the consultants in creating the ethical standards among the pharmaceutical businesses. Through the use of the secondary information, the study can discuss not only the nature and overview of the business’s performance but also their ability to support the ethical standards. The study can have a thorough analysis regarding the compliance of the business and measure the level of the organizations approach in considering the ethical standards in their operation.
