LISE PREP ART HISTORY ESSAY: PIET MONDRIAN

Piet Mondrian is an important artist who was born in 1872 in Holland, and died in 1944. Mostly, he became different from other artists via his different and interesting style. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1892 to 1897. For the next eleven years after he finished his study, he painted naturalistic art. Also, he used different influences from the Dutch Impressionism and Symbolism styles in his techniques; however the greatest influence was cubism in his life. I had chosen his one of the important work of art that is called “Composite Damboard, Donkere Kleuren” and shows his style perfectly.

Actually, in the painting that is chosen by me, there is not an evident subject, nevertheless when you look at the painting, you may see squares which are the different colored, but same size with each other. I think, in the painting, Piet Mondrian is trying to tell something that is not an easily understandable, but a meaningful thing. It is the equality. Also, if we examine the colors and size of the painting, we may understand that orange, red and purple are the main colors and the size of the work is 84x102cm. Also, in the painting squares are the dominant shapes in the work, since the painting is occurred by squares.

Similarly, due to the fact that the painting is occurred by squares, there is not an exact focal point, however when I first see the art work, the middle of the work stroke my eyes. Also, since the art work is an interesting, colorful and meaningful picture, I have chosen that art work. However, it doesn’t show Mondrian’s historical or social background. As I before said, the painting is meaningful, but it isn’t very intelligible. Nevertheless as I said and think that the art work’s story is about equality. The squares have different colors, however they are all same size and they combine with each other. Similarly, if we adapt the squares to humans, we may see the equality in the painting. Humans can be different from each other, however all in all, all humans are equal and they must live together. In other words, nobody can live alone.

Last, but not least, I ought to say that the painting is a meaningful work and it made me thinking about itself much, since the meanings are secret inside the squares. Also, it deals with an important and controversial topic that is equality. Thus, I like it much.
