Mask

: It was the first day of our new life. We were at the first step of our architecture lives. First lesson was a math lesson that we were used to have in high school. Nevertheless, next one was pretty different. It was the Architecture Project 1. After meeting with our new teachers, we went up stairs to our studio and faced with our first projects, the mask and the portrait. Firstly, we started to draw the portraits of our partners by touching its face not seeing at the same time. Secondly, we started the mask. We were supposed to create a mask that was suitable for the person’s who was sitting opposite of us, character, expressions, face, body, mimics etc. We had not so much time to get enough information about the partners and actually not knowing our partners was the interesting part of the project. The feelings were the forces that direct us to shape the masks.

My partner was Tsoava who was a foreign student. I firstly try to observe his physical characteristics and created the outer boundaries of the mask. Then, I made two openings for his slanting eyes and shaped the mask according to his face, forehead, nose, eyes, etc. After the physical part, this time I needed to observe his emotional part and decided to create a king (with a crowd) whose mouth was stamped. I was affected by his quietness and when I put myself on his shoes, I felt lonely. Possibly, he was very social in his country, but now he was the king who can not command.
