Improving Vocabulary and Comprehension Skills for Students

Introduction

Most of the typical skills that a student should posses are the ability to speak and read. All of the students can fully accomplish this requirement but not all of them can properly use the language, say the right pronunciation and understand what they have just read. In this case, the students’ capacity to learn becomes very low and their confidence to face the challenges after the graduation are also affected.

Background of the Study and Problem Statement

Young children have a natural way to communicate and sometimes through observation, they can easily adopt unto their environment. The simple communications wherein the children are engaged are through listening and speaking. And throughout the years, the students can express his way of communication through reading and writing and these skills are recognized as an advantage for they can enhance their vocabulary and comprehend (Pikulski and Templeton, 2004). However, in the development of the students as readers and writers, there is an increasing relative issue about the needs of improvement mostly in the areas of vocabulary which is the great passage to comprehend.

Research Objectives

The study identified the underpinning objective which is firstly, to identify the areas of vocabulary that are needed to be improved. Secondly, to assess the different ways on how the educators can foster the needs for improvement. And thirdly is to measure the different ways on the efficacy of the improvement programs in vocabulary and comprehension.

Significance of the Study

There is a weighted importance of the study in the pedagogical contexts. Since the study is fully centered on the ways on how to improve the skills of the students, therefore, the contribution is concentrated on the mainstream of the curriculums. In addition, the study viewed it importance as a mirror of the education towards it aim for quality of education.

Research Questions

There are three key questions that the study identified. All of the questions can serve as the propeller of the paper to meet its own objectives.

1. What are the curricular innovation being implemented in the educational institutions?

2. What are the obvious weakest skills among the students that should be improved?

3. What are the significant changes in the study behaviors or attitudes of the students upon the implementation of their educational program?

Literature Review

Through the different programs on the students’ vocabulary and comprehension achievement, it is expected that the students should show the different approach towards the educational programs. But the educators and administrators are aiming to witness the gains that their students can have after their interaction with such programs (Nelson and Stage, 2006). The combination of the vocabulary and reading program is a systematic teacher-aid approach in which the students are helping to improve their reading and speaking capacity. Providing the students with the effective vocabulary instruction is the best program that the educators and administrators are attempting to tie in the students’ schedules. This strategic yet intensive program will ensure the students to receive what they truly need for it was crafted to focus on the listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities of the students (Gilmour, 2006).

Methodology

The applied method of the study is the use of interviews. The participants are mixture of the school’s population of students and teachers. First the data were taken such as the age, gender, and the number of year working/studying in the school. The students and teachers were asked about their opinions toward the educational program provided to enhance the students’ skills in vocabulary and ability to comprehend. Also, they were asked about the obvious result they gain after the program.

Conclusion

There is a great need for the improvement of the vocabulary instruction to improve the student’s ability to comprehend. Fostering the improvement in the education is mainly the responsibility of the teachers to help the students transfer the vocabulary skills from one form to another. If the student is exposed in the vocabulary program for a long period of time, there is no doubt that the students may show greater gains.
