HALO: Ghosts of Onyx

The year is 2531, and the Covenant is advancing and humanity is on the edge of extinction. Find out what will happen to humanity in the third book of the HALO series; HALO, Ghosts of Onyx, by Eric Nylund. Overall, this was a first-rate book because of the author’s Aristotelian unity of characters and plot. The author utilized a great set of characters and provided a fantastic description about them. This gives you an excellent idea of who they are and what their role is in the story. The author also uses an intense plot that will make you want to continue reading until the very end.

One of the reasons this book is so superior is the way the author applies the Aristotelian Unity of characters. In this book you meet with the protagonist Kurt, and you receive a great description of him. In the book, you also meet, but not first hand, the antagonist, the Covenant. You also receive a decent description of them as well. There are also several secondary characters like Ackerson, Tom, Lucy, Adam, and others through out the book. The author was very good with giving you a great depiction of them as well. An example of how well the author described the characters is of Tom. The author established that he is a Spartan soldier, that he wears MJOLNIR armour and describes what that is. He applies words like deadly and tough and advises that he has little or no emotion and is a great leader. A quote out of the book that the author wrote about Kurt is; “’I’ve put you in for a promotion. Your Spartans preformed well above the program’s projected parameters. You are to be commended.’” This was taken out of the book on page 88.

A second reason why this book is superior is the way that the author uses the Aristotelian Unity of plot. In this story the author used two trigger events to garb your attention and the trigger events will keep you wondering what will happen next. The first trigger event isn’t as strong as the second one, but it does catch your attention at the very beginning of the book. Shortly after the first trigger event is resolved, the second and strongest trigger event occurs. This event hooks the reader into wanting to continue reading to find out what will happen. The author used real suspending twist and developments as another form of catching your attention. The
