The Importance of Desktop Publishing for Teaching Professional Writing

Introduction

Technologies of writing are a great deal and its assessment or measurement is based on the individual’s view on the technology in terms of the philosophy of writing, language, and communication. Technology can be applied in writing and writing can be applied in technology because there is a human intervention that links between them.

Background of the Study and Problem Statement

The specified tools used in professional writing have been evolved alongside with the evolution of technology. The use of different computer software and features are applied in the idea of desktop publishing. Through the desktop publishing as t is applied to professional, it can help the production of brochures as in advertisement, pamphlets, and to produce other sophisticated publications. Still, there is a remaining question about the importance of desktop publishing in teaching the professional writing.

Research Objectives

The research is looking forward to find clarity in the intervention of the desktop publishing in professional writing. In addition, the research makes it possible to help the individuals to understand, apply, or assess the computer technology in relation to their respective careers. To understand the importance of the desktop publishing in the business world and to relate it to other major computer application are the other aims of the study.

Research Questions

Technology is the main tool used in desktop publishing and to be specified, computers are the tool being replaced to the traditional pencil and paper. The research provided some questions that will suit in determining the importance of the desktop publishing in professional writing.

1) What are the capacities or capabilities of the technology to support the professional writing and its teaching?

2) How accessible is the use of technology such as computers and Internet to satisfy the skills of individuals in professional writing?

3) How to apply the transformation of professional writing into the desktop publishing?

4) What are the influences that the use of desktop publishing might contribute to support the professional writing?

Literature Review

Writing refers to the words or prose in sentences and paragraphs (Porter, 2002). Professional writing serves a wide variety of writing-related positions in business, education, publishing, and the arts. The professional writing allows an individual to produce or analyze the other texts related in the professional and in return, develop a sophisticated understanding of style, structure, and capturing the right audience (Kennesaw, 2008). Teaching professional writing recognizes the effectiveness of communication and to support this approach, institutions developed certain strategies that postulate better future and professionalism in writing. Although there are many challenges involved such as diversity, the instructor can still meet the necessary requirement through the continuous monitoring of the student’s response and the adaptation of the material (Scheffler, 1995). The introduction of the desktop publishing is about the practice in computer such as examining the word processing, graphic and text experience, explore the skills needed to produce professional quality newsletters, brochures, reports, pamphlets, and books (Kennesaw, 2008). Technology is already applied in writing but still can vary depending on the use of the particular technology and habits and attitudes of the writer. Same as the traditional writing, desktop publishing also emphasize the applied style, syntax, coherence, and organization of words (Porter, 2002; Chadwick, 2010). It was examined that the use of desktop publishing is more on the discipline and accuracy, precision and correctness, much more than making the writing look good and acceptable to the eye.

Methodology

The applied method of the research is assessing the utilized software in the professional writing. The PageMaker 6.5, Microsoft Clipart Gallery, Corel Gallery Clipart, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Windows 98, any other software that can be applied. There should be a comparison between the traditional writing and desktop publishing.

Conclusion

Desktop publishing introduced a new concept of writing through the development of the sophisticated documents. It emphasizes the creation of the notes such as manuscripts that will be viewed in public and assessed by the professionals like the businessmen. The principles lying in the design and layout of the desktop can be well practice of an individual as long as he or she has a desire to pursue it. Still, it is important that there is a personal help form the experts or tutors.
