Night

Many people cease to feel human when they are going through difficult times in their lives. As for Elie he was forced to wear a Jewish star, he had to fight for his food like an animal, and he was stamped like an inanimate object, just like everyone else. So it really is no surprise that he lost his sense of dignity and humanity.

First and foremost wearing a Jewish star on your sleeve. During the time of Jewish discrimination, it was mandatory for them to wear a yellow Jewish star when going outside. In doing this it sort of gave them the feeling that they had to identify themselves with a symbol and not through personality or looks. It was like branding a herd of cattle’s.

Secondly food scarcity in the camps. In these concentration camps, just a little bit of bread was like a pot of gold for them. They were very malnourished and who knows where the food that they gave them came from. They were like animals in a jungle, always thinking when they could get their next loaf of dirty bread. And sometimes they would have to fight with other inmates for that little piece of food.

And lastly being tattooed, dressing all the same, and everyone having their head shaven; including girls. Imagine living looking like everyone else and being treated excruciatingly horrible just because of your beliefs. This made them feel ashamed of their religion. And that’s just plain wrong because no one should be afraid to show who they truly are.

In conclusion the holocaust and what it did to the Jewish community made a worldwide impact and it should never happen again. It’s just wrong and sad to even think a person could be so cold hearted as to do what the Nazis did to these people in the camps. Elie Wiesel did a great job portraying in his novel “Night” what the holocaust did to just one person mentally and physically. “To remain silent and indifferent is the greatest sin of all.”
